Traditional figure drawing gets a theatrical twist at Stage & Sketch, a free monthly program at the Dixon Gallery & Gardens where artists of every skill level gather to sketch performers dressed in imaginative costumes.
Co-organized by Memphis artist Shelda Edwards and Dixon Public Programs Coordinator Lacy Mitcham, Stage & Sketch grew from a shared vision to make figure drawing more expressive and accessible. The two first connected through the Dixon Community Day’s Women in the Arts programming and quickly realized they both wanted to create a drawing session featuring performers whose costumes, makeup, and personalities would inspire artists in new ways.
“With traditional figure drawing, the model is usually dressed simply or nude,” Mitcham says. “Here, you get interesting fabrics, textures, props, and personality. Because the models are performers, they’re comfortable engaging with an audience, and that adds another layer of creativity.”
Edwards, founder of Rainbow Rumble, recruits a different performer for each session, ensuring no two evenings are alike. While models hold classic timed poses — beginning with quick 30-second gestures before progressing to longer poses — they occasionally surprise participants with a spontaneous performance or prop change.
The program welcomes everyone, from first-time sketchers to experienced artists. Participants bring their preferred drawing supplies, whether paper or digital, while a limited number of extra materials are available. Mitcham says the sessions have also become popular as creative date nights.
The atmosphere is intentionally relaxed. Soft music plays while participants spread out on bean bags, chairs, or the carpeted floor, creating a comfortable environment where creativity takes center stage rather than perfection.
Beyond practicing drawing skills, Mitcham hopes attendees leave with something even more meaningful. “We’re seeing regulars alongside new faces, and people are making connections,” she says. “With so many adults experiencing loneliness, having a place where people can gather creatively in a welcoming environment is really valuable.”
Like all Dixon admission, Stage & Sketch is free, reflecting the museum’s commitment to removing barriers to arts participation.
Held on the second Thursday of each month, the upcoming session will be on July 9, and the next session will be on August 13. Whether you’re picking up a pencil for the first time in years or sketching every day, Stage & Sketch offers a low-pressure opportunity to create and connect.
