U.S. House Democrats want answers from Elon Musk about the effects of his data centers on Tennessee and Mississippi communities.
House Rep. Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ) sent a letter to Musk regarding the data center expansions in local communities. Pallone serves on the Energy and Commerce Committee.
Pallone requested SpaceXAI provide a list of all turbines powering Colossus 1 and Colossus 2, communications between company employees and representatives pertaining to the data canters, and other documentation and analysis regarding emissions, power consumption, and water usage at the sites.
“The Trump Administration has essentially claimed that it alone decides whether SpaceXAI and other companies get a free pass to pollute unimpeded,” Pallone said. “But just because the Trump Administration will bend over backward to give tech companies free rein over community air, water, and land does not make your actions legal.”
This letter comes after Democrats met with AI companies over the past few months to discuss energy consumption, environmental impacts, and promises to community members. Committee members are looking to see what federal protections can be placed to protect community members.
According to a statement from Energy and Commerce Democrats, SpaceXAI representatives have been “unwilling to engage in serious discussion” during meetings.
“Communites across the nation are frustrated and angry about the pace of giant data centers,” Pallone’s letter said. “Americans are concerned about what data centers and Big Tech’s push for more AI means for their communities, jobs, property values, and future.”
Pallone said Musk’s data centers “disregard [the] health and well-being of local communities.” He referenced the use of gas-powered turbines, which have been a point of controversy for environmental groups and local residents.
