The Dobbs House Luau

Case in point: The Dobbs House Luau on Poplar, one of our city's most popular eateries, and a place that has been on my "wish list" of photographs for years. But looking through a 1961 White Station High School Spartan the other day, I came across this photo of the entrance, showing the giant "tiki" head that was a Memphis landmark — and came to an ignominious end. The very phrase that, I fear, will be engraved on my tombstone!

I should explain, first of all, that the Luau was our city's answer to the Polynesian-themed restaurant craze that inexplicably swept across this country in the 1960s. I have no idea what prompted it. Every city had such a place, it seems, featuring exotic interiors with waterfalls and coconuts and lots of bamboo, thatched roofs and palm trees on the outside, and a menu that — well, more about that later. Many of them were also decorated with those giant stone heads like you've seen on Easter Island.

What do you mean, you've never been to Easter Island? Well, surely you've seen pictures of the place, haven't you? If not, stop right here and Google it, and then resume reading. Ready? Okay then. Let's move on.

The restaurant at 3135 Poplar, across from East High School, didn't always look that way. In fact, a more traditional eatery called Friedel's Restaurant opened there in 1940. In the 1950s, the building housed The Old Master Says restaurant, topped with a giant plaster head of the owner, John George Morris (apparently this building was a magnet for giant heads). At any rate, in the late 1950s, Dobbs Houses, which was already operating a number of smaller, diner-type joints around town, purchased the site and converted the building into a full-scale steak restaurant.

But in 1959, they transformed the building into the Luau, and Memphians had never seen anything like it. Diners walked past a 12-foot-tall concrete head by the entrance, and then entered a lush tropical paradise, with tables sheltered by palm leaves and palmetto fronds. The Memphis Room at the main library has an old Luau menu in its collection, which lists some rather unusual fare. This was almost certainly the only eatery in town where diners could enjoy barbecued suckling pig ("cooked whole with a smile on his face and a lei of carved vegetables around his neck"). Come on, now. Do you really think it was a smile? There was also Lobster Cantonese, Susu Crab Curry, and Buttered Euphrates Waferettes. For dessert, you could gulp down coconut ice cream, watermelon sherbet, or something called Huk-Al-Pie ("a sorcerer's blend of dark chocolate and rum").

The Luau was extremely popular, as you might imagine, and Dobbs Houses eventually opened similar establishments in Atlanta, Birmingham, Charlotte, Dallas, Miami, Orlando, and Lexington. But the novelty eventually wore off, I suppose, and it closed in February 1982. The owners told reporters, "It is simply the end of an era." Last time I looked, the main building was a doctor's office.

But what happened to that giant head, made of concrete sprayed over wire mesh? Several people insisted it had somehow ended up at Rooke Sails, a boat place at Lamar and Prescott. But I couldn't find it there, so I pestered the owners until they put me in touch with Stan Johnson, who owned a swimming pool and boat business on Getwell called Water Sports, and he told me about the last days of the Luau head.

According to Johnson, the head was moved to Tiki Pools on Getwell after the restaurant shut its doors. How it got there I have no idea. But when the pool business also closed in the 1980s, the head remained behind. Not for long. One of Stan's customers was a well-known local musician named Bill Cunningham, who saw the head in the lot one day and bought it. "He told me he had purchased a house for his mother and was going to put it in the backyard," said Johnson, "with a barbecue pit set into the base so the smoke would come out of the ears." That would have been something to see, and I'm sure the neighbors would have loved it.

But it never happened. One day Cunningham brought over a big crane, and workers began to hoist the head onto the back of a flatbed truck. "They put a harness around it and began to lift it vertically, but then it tilted at a 45-degree angle," Johnson told me. "Then we heard the biggest crash, and everybody started running." The big head had snapped in half and crashed down on the truck, shattering into a million pieces.

Today the giant head — and the Luau it guarded — are just memories of Lost Memphis.

This is just a legend. The big giant head was actually purchased by the Presley estate and is now gracing Elvis' backyard in Kalamazoo.

WELL, I HADN'T THOUGHT ABOUT THIS GIANT HEAD IN YEARS, BUT I HAVE WONDERED ABOUT THE GIANT PEANUT MAN THAT STOOD PROUDLY ON SUMMER AVENUE NEAR POP TUNES FOR YEARS. I COULD SEE THE TOP OF HIS HEAD FROM MY HOUSE. ALSO, WHERE ARE THE GIANTS TODAY THAT STOOD IN FRONT OF THE GIANT FOOD STORES. I FELT SORRY FOR THEM IN THE WINTER, BECAUSE THEY HAD ON SHORT SLEEVE SHIRTS!

One of the giants from the Giant Supermarket is on South 3rd, aka US Hwy 61, just before the Mississippi state line.

Actually, the Dobb's bought the ATL Luau from the Dinkler family in 1958-59. And from there they began their chain of Dobb's House Luaus. The original Luau was the Dinkler Luau.

I remember my parents taking us there in the very early 70s. The lights were so dim I couldn't see the menu and ordered a bologna sandwich. We also got our rears tanned for wading in the koy pond. Oh those fond memories.

I remember when the Luau was truly exotic eating. We ate there back in the early '70s once or twice, but while my old man liked the fact he could get a stiff drink like a "Sufferin' Bastard," he couldn't get past the fact that it was a Dobbs property, and therefore industrial catering. Later on, it was a great place to go in high school because the low light made it a great place to pass a fake ID and get hammered.

My mom used to take me there back in the '60s and I thought it was one of the most special places anywhere! She would drag me to who-knows-how-many stores along Summer to do her shopping. All that concrete was so hot, but when we'd walk into the Luau, that cold air-conditioning felt like a miracle! Loved it!

For many years my parents would say when I begged them to take me to this exotic looking place, "You're not old enough, it's a grown-up restaurant." Translation: we're not spending that kind of money for you to order a hamburger.

When I was finally deemed a respectful age, the reality to my fantasy did not disappoint. I was mesmerized immediately upon stepping through the door and was transported from a sleepy Southern town to the South Pacific. It remained a special place for me to dine with my parents until I moved away, forgot about my little paradise, and then on a visit home, sadly learned of the closing. Thank you for taking me back to that wonderful memory. Love, love, love your blog!

I believe the craze began around 1959 when Hawaii became a state ... just a guess, mind you.

The Luau Room at Dallas Love Field served a dish called Celestial Chicken that really was out of this world. I would love to find the recipe for this amazing dish!

I remember eating at the Luau as a toddler. I was born in Memphis, in 1964. I loved it there. It was such a treat. My family moved away in 1969, so it is now a memory of days long gone.

I worked at Birmingham's Dobbs House Luau back in the late 60s. (It was actually in Irondale) I watched the moon landing there on a small black-and-white TV with the rest of the crew on shift that evening. In the summer we waitresses wore grass skirts over a bikini or one-piece bathing suit. In winter we wore floor-length mu-mu's (sp?) which were form-fitting in the bodice and flared in back. Such distinguished guests as the Harlem Globetrotters dined with us. I once served a senator (lousy tipper), and the great big guy who played the bad guy in some of the James Bond movies, among others. I think his name was Richard Keel?

At the Luau in Irondale we served a dessert called a Flaming Kona. It was ice cream and fruit served in a conch shell over which we would pour flaming rum/flambe (anyway there was fire). It was served rather ceremonially and dramatically. The rum was carried to the table in a skull cup. At the table the waitress would pick up a table knife and jiggle it around inside the cup of rum while making as much racket as possible by banging the knife against the sides of the cup. Then, as she removed the knife from the cup, she would make a dramatic swooping arc with her arm and dip the rum-coated knife into the candle flame on the table. Then her arm would swoop back, plunge the flaming knife back into the rum cup and begin to pour the flame onto the dessert, trailing the fire up and down while banging the knife against the sides and front of the cup, again making a considerable noise. All the better to get attention, not only with the fire, but with the "ceremonial" racket. The Flaming Kona, needless to say, was a popular item, and the girls who were the biggest showboaters (and not afraid of the fire) got a lot of requests.

Another memory: I once had a male guest at my table who gave me ten dollars for one grass out of my grass skirt.
