Bernie "It Was Too Good To Be True" Madoff at the MJJC

Erin Arvedlund: She didn't believe those profits either, so she investigated Madoff for Barron's back in 2001, but the SEC wouldn't follow up on her or anyone's suspicions. And now, Arvedlund's written about Madoff again. The book's called Too Good To Be True: The Rise and Fall of Bernie Madoff, and on Thursday, November 12th, at 7 p.m., Arvedlund is in Memphis to discuss Madoff and sign copies of her book at the Memphis Jewish Community Center.
Arvedlund is one of several authors in town to participate in the MJCC's 2009 "Celebration of Jewish Life," at the center November 12th-22nd. And if Madoff is no laughing matter, author Malcolm Lindy is. He's written The Temple President, which mixes humor with questions about the nature of God, anti-Semitism, and religious traditions. He'll be on hand on November 15th.
There's more this year to celebrate at the MJCC's "Celebration of Jewish Life": a showing of the film adaptation of Isaac Bashevis Singer's Enemies: A Love Story; a book fair; a holiday bazaar of hand-crafted gift items; and food at the Holy Cow cafe.

Speaking of Ponzi schemes; what about social security? It works the same way and the politicians are never arrested! The government squandered the funds that are allegedly for our retirement, yet present generation workers are paying for the retired folks. Recently, the new House health care plan has a long-term insurance program that starts collecting premiums in 2011, but doesn't start paying the benefits until 2016. It then runs out of money in 2029. Democrat Kent Conrad of North Dakota called it "a Ponzi scheme of the first order, the kind of thing that Bernie Madoff would have been proud of". (interview in the Washington Post in late Oct).
