A canning class at the main library and a "taste of the town" over the bridge. ...

The Memphis Public Library continues its "Experience Series" with its free "Food Preservation 101" tonight at 7 p.m. at the Benjamin L. Hooks Central Library.

The class, taught by University of Tennessee nutritionist Donna Downen, will cover the basics of canning, freezing, and other methods of preserving food.

Downen, who taught her first canning class in 1975, says the class will address the "whys." (The "whys" boil down to, more or less, avoiding botulism.)

Preserving food is "easy," says Downen, "if you follow the rules."

Also tonight, Main Street West Memphis is hosting its Taste of the Town fund-raiser at Southland Park Gaming and Racing Kennel Club, from 6:30-9 p.m.

The event will feature food from regional restaurants, caterers, and vendors, including Kooky Canuck, U.S. Food Service, and Southland's Bourbon Street Steakhouse Grill. There will also be seven wines provided by Hooper Sales and premium beer from Budweiser.

According to Leigh Ann Hastings of Main Street West Memphis, about 400 tickets have been sold, though tickets are still available for $30 at the door.
