Giving It a Swirl: Gigi's Cupcakes

When Food News writer Pam Denney and I left the newly opened Gigi's Cupcakes yesterday, we felt big disappointment.

A man had seen us scribbling notes and taking pictures and asked if we were from the media. We said we were. "The Commercial Appeal?" he asked. "The Flyer," we said. His face fell!

At least he had the cupcake to comfort him.

Gigi's is a franchise based out of Nashville. The first Memphis location was opened last Saturday by Marilyn Weber.

It was marriage that led Weber to Gigi's. She wanted something simple for the wedding and served Gigi's cupcakes.

Gigi's features a rotating menu of imaginative and pretty cupcakes. Gingerbread (pictured at top) is gingerbread cake with cream cheese frosting topped by a gingerbread man. The Chocolate Malt is a milk chocolate cake with chocolate malt buttercream frosting sprinkled with crushed malt balls and decorated with a straw.

All of the cupcakes come with a generous amount of frosting. That's known as the "swirl," a Gigi's signature, one of the employees told us.

I tried the Memphis Mud — pecan-pie cake with chocolate chips and chocolate malt frosting. It was delicious. Pam got the Texas Milk Chocolate — milk chocolate cake with milk chocolate frosting decorated with a large yellow fondant star. She said it was a struggle to have to share with her husband.

Gigi's Cupcakes is open Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., and is located at 4709 Poplar (888-CAKE).

I went there when they first opened and I had a coupon. I thought their cupcakes were beautiful to look at, but didn't like that they were half cupcake and half frosting - too much sugar! For a tabletop decoration at a luncheon, they are great; for eating, not so much. I prefer Muddy's Bake Shop around the corner - the counter help is friendlier at Muddy's too.

I was looking on the web to find a cupcake shop in the area so the first name that popped up was GIGI's; that was a blessing in disguise. The cupcakes were the tastiest, moist, and delicious morsels i've ever had. The variety of different flavor combinations are so vast you won't believe it, I can't wait to tell all my friends and co-workers:A LITTLE PRICEY but worth every penny!
