Tastin' 'Round Town's Lance Silkes includes Lunchbox Eats on his tours because it represents both "old school" and the future of Memphis with its upscale take on down-home soul food.
Absolutely. But this cake here — I'm drawn first and foremost by its Seussian charm.
Now about Memphis magazine's dining issue ...
It's on the stands and not only includes my Tastin' Round Town story but also the winners of the Readers' Restaurant Poll; a Q&A with Channel 5's Andy Wise; and a profile of chef Jose Gutierrez, who marks 30 years in Memphis.
A few things I learned from the issue:
• Andy Wise became a red wine drinker under the influence of Andy and Michael of Andrew Michael Italian Kitchen/Hog & Hominy.
• That Wang's Mandarin House, winner of Best Chinese Restaurant, has something in common with Jose Gutierrez in that it, too, is celebrating its 30th year.
• That Gutierrez grew his once-signature mustache at age 21 to appear older.
