Lowery Statement Re: Fullilove

Posted by Mary Cashiola on Wed, Jul 8, 2009 at 12:41 PM

Council chair/temporary mayor Myron Lowery has issued a statement regarding Janis Fullilove's indictment today on three misdemeanor charges related to driving with a revoked license.

It reads, in full:

"The indictment of Council Member Janis Fullilove on charges related to obtaining a replacement driver's license and driving while her license was revoked is a personal matter and not a Council matter. While we have heard the charges against Councilwoman Fullilove, we will reserve judgment until her issues are resolved in court. Since Councilwoman Fullilove has not been charged with official misconduct related to her office, the City Council's options are limited.

As chairman, I will make a formal request to the City of Memphis Ethics Officer, Elbert Jefferson to investigate this matter and advise the Council. The grand jury's indictment reminds us appropriately that elected officials are not above the law and should be treated the same as any citizen suspected of breaking the law."

Lowery's doublespeak:

"is a personal matter and not a Council matter, ... I will make a formal request to the City of Memphis Ethics Officer, Elbert Jefferson to investigate this matter and advise the Council.."

If it only a personal matter, why the request.

I think the Flyer should do some statistical analysis involving our elected officials and indictments. That would be an interesting read.

Anyone who has lived in Memphis long enough realizes that "it's all about 'da hook-up." Ms. Fullilove has an obvious problem that has needed attention for years. She however, is a councilwoman. This privileged position, in a community of impoverished and ill-educated voters, has allowed her to manipulate the laws and the rules of society. Our citizens take their cues from so called "leaders" that know how to play what is obviously a game. Don't want to wait in line to have your car emissions tested? Simple. Call a friend who works there and have them certify that your car is excluded from this process. Need about 18 months to pay your utility bills that are in arrears? Smooze with the friends that can make those annoying cut-off-notices disappear. Has your dope head son been pulled over by the cops? Prevention is the cure! Cultivate a few friends at M.P.D. to call you before your little stoner has to climb into the D.U.I. van. This is wrong legally but also morally wrong. In a city that is comprised of majority black citizens, it amazes me that voters wink at the obvious character flaws of their elected representatives. Voters turn a blind eye toward Councilwoman Fulliloves' persistent impaired driving history. Her lawbending has become a joke! Here is something that may make her foibles less funny to the black community: Should Ms. Fullilove hurt, or maime, or kill a child while d.u.i., .....that child has a 70 per cent chance of being black. Racist statement? Nope. Statistics are colorblind.

Zebra, that's half the reason people go into politics in the first place. The other half is to get paid.

She needs rehab, not jail unless she can receive rehab while in jail.

to marie,

You've got it all wrong. Fullilove needs to be in jail for a long time. This thing with the drivers license is just what she has been caught at. She is just as corrupt as King Willie or any of the other loyal (and criminal) members of the royal court!

Janis fullilove belongs in jail. Then and only then, can it be shown that she is not ABOVE the law. I agree with 38103. We should see how many of the coucil people and others in those higher positions have been in trouble with the law. We really need almost a whole new council.
