Welcome Back

Posted By on Mon, Jul 20, 2009 at 12:11 PM

Oh. Hey, there.

I know, blogging has been a little light as of late. I've got this other thing going on and I've been distracted by some other stuff, mainly this week's upcoming cover story.

More on that later, tho.

For now, let's see what's going on.

Grist has a list of the 15 most sustainable cities in America. Don't hold your breath; Memphis isn't on the list.

Some of the usual suspects are — Seattle, San Fran, Portland — as well as some you might not expect (Dallas? Really? And I say that with a lot of love for the Big D).

USA Today had a story recently about suburbs becoming more like urban areas, with higher-density developments, mixed uses, a focus on walkability. Locally, I am reminded of Germantown's smart-growth plan.

And results from the second round of public input on the Mud Island Land Use Study are now available online.

D.A. Bill Gibbons and MPD director are announcing nuisance actions later on today against Hughes Uptown and the High Point Pinch Bar. More on that later.

UPDATE: According to the D.A.'s office, MPD undercover officers observed open use of marijuana and purchased illegal narcotics six times at the High Point Pinch between March of last year and February of this one.

MPD officers went to Hughes Uptown 80 times between March 2008 and 2009, making more than 20 arrests. Undercover officers observed patrons using drugs inside the club and large crowds congregating outside, consuming alcohol both inside and outside of vehicles. (That seems kind of a double whammy to me. Not only is the club closed because people are drinking in their cars, people are drinking in their cars. I'm assuming that not all that alcohol came from the club.)

The owners of both of the clubs are schedule to appear before Environmental Court judge Larry Potter Friday, July 24th.
