You may have heard about the phenomenon that took place in towns and cities around the world last week. I'm speaking, of course, of the World Naked Bike Ride. WNBR events are, according to various WNBR websites, "a peaceful, imaginative and fun protest against oil dependency and car culture. A celebration of the bicycle and also a celebration of the power and individuality of the human body. A symbol of the vulnerability of the cyclist in traffic. It's the world's biggest naked protest: 50+ cities and thousands of riders participate worldwide."
They also appear to be a major hoot. Check out this one in Chicago. Try as I might, I can't imagine this happening along, say, Walnut Grove in Memphis. With a police escort, no less.

Memphis doesn't have nearly that many cyclists. At the Bicycle Film Fest it seemed that half of the people I talked to had come from Nashville (and who wants to see Nashvillians naked?)
As the least bike-friendly city - and by this I mean the deplorable road conditions and fact that every Memphian behind the wheel of a car is so self-absorbed they are never paying attention to the rest of the street - and as the fattest city in the country, I see nothing but bad things happening here. Of course, it would make it easier for the morgue director if he didn't have to remove clothes before slabbing the poor victims of Shelby County road rage.
Nothing like a bunch of toothless pot head Memphians riding around naked in 100 plus degree weather through town to make my kids vomit in the car.
We REALLY need this.
This'll show em. If I do this ride naked, can I return to my easy chair for life knowing I did my part for........what was it again?
Whatever.
I rode WNBR in Portland, Oregon. A beautiful event, like a fluid party flowing through the streets. Most pedestrians and motorists enjoyed seeing us; most people had cameras and used them freely. No harm. Much fun. Freedom is good for you.
