On Thursday, July 22, 2010 a family member of Lorenzen Wright filed a missing persons report with the Collierville Police Department. Wright was last seen at his ex-wife’s house on Sunday, July 18th shortly before midnight.
Through the course of the Collierville Police Department’s missing person’s investigation, it was discovered that a 911 call was placed from Wright’s phone in the early hours of July 19th. After extensive examination, investigators determined that the call was made from the area south of Poplar Pike and west of Hacks Cross Rd.
Due to the potential overlapping of several jurisdictions, the Collierville Police Department requested to meet with representatives from adjoining agencies. On Wednesday July 28th at 9:00am Collierville PD, the Germantown PD, the Shelby County Sheriffs Department and the Memphis Police Department’s Homicide Bureau met to discuss the investigation.
At this meeting, coordinated by the Collierville Police Department, each agency committed resources to assist in searching for any evidence related to the 911 call and the missing person’s investigation.
Collierville and Germantown investigators combed the areas and interviewed witnesses while the Memphis Police Department’s Air Support Unit searched the area from the air and the Shelby County Sheriffs Department deployed search dogs in the wooded areas.
At approximately 2:20 PM on Wednesday July 28, 2010 Shelby County Emergency Services Search and Rescue located the body of Lorenzen Wright off of Callis Cutoff between Hacks Cross Rd and Germantown Road in Southeast Memphis. Memphis Police Department Homicide investigators made the scene and took over the investigation. Through identification of dental records, the Shelby County Medical Examiner has officially identified the victim as that of Lorenzen Wright. The cause of death has been ruled as homicide by gunshot wound.
The Memphis Police Department will continue this investigation. As is done in every homicide investigation, investigators continue to work around the clock to bring justice to Mr. Wright and his family.
Additional details will be released when appropriate and available; many details which the media have reported will not be commented on. Maintaining the integrity of all information and evidence related to the investigation of any crime is essential. Leaks and the dissemination of false information can have serious, detrimental effects on the pursuit and prosecution of those responsible for this crime.

Words cannot adequately describe the heinousness of this crime, or the tragedy it constitutes for so many people, and all of our hearts go out to Mr. Wright's loved ones.
The justice the MPD needs to "bring" (to quote its release), however, is not to Mr. Wright or his family, and saying so (as the release does) makes the MPD sound almost like some kind of private police force. If justice is going to be "brought" to anyone here, it must be to the perpetrator(s) of this despicable crime.
The criminal laws exist for the protection of society, as a whole. That is why, when a prosecution is initiated, it isn't brought in the name of the victim (or his/her family); it is brought in the name of the "People," or of the "State."
It is unlikely there will ever be justice for Mr. Wright or his family after what happened, since nothing can rectify the injustice that was wreaked on them by this crime, but it is to be fervently hoped there will be justice for whoever committed this despicable act, and that our society's collective interest in justice will be vindicated. That is the justice the MPD should be (and I'm sure is) working to "bring."
Tragedy? Absolutely. Mystery? Let's not be simpletons.
Ever notice golfers never end up like this? It is all about lifestyle choices.
I don't know, I could see John Daly ending up shot in a ditch somewhere. But I agree, the only mystery is in the details.
As a personal friend of Lorenzen's, and other high profile individuals, I know that not all retired basketball players end up viciously killed within their hometowns. Perhaps we should focus more on how to follow up with 911 calls and id police jurisdictions instead of degrading one's profession. As well, Ren was known to not alllow anyone to be a stranger to him. He was bubbly, friendly, and law abiding. If this was not a random act of robbery (which I doubt), I hope that whomever took advantage of him and robbed us all of future memories is found. I hope that no other Memphian loses a friend or a relative to gun violence, regardless of their previous profession or celebrity status.
If your theory of events in this case turns out not to be true, will you finally shut up for ever more?
Ahhhh.... I see Tommy Chickenhawk is talking about the only black man he isn't afraid of... a dead one.
Tommy, you're so farm league. You're never gonna make the majors chief. Time to hang it up. Last time you tangled with Terry you got you arse kicked, and kicked good.
I still have the email chain. It's good reading.
I don't know anyone named Russ, I believe in God, and I am probably one of the only liberals in the state who supported the guns in bars law. What the fuck does any of that have to do with Lorenzen Wright's murder?
Typical Southern white male comments regarding black men. Have some couth. I don't recall reading the same type of disparaging comments about Ben Rothlisberger...but hey, I forget, he's a white athlete & I suppose he didn''t make the "decisions of a dumb ass". We are however in agreement about the fact that neither you nor I knew Mr. Wright personally. So what purpose does it serve to bad mouth him?
@Tommy Volinchak: Have some couth. What purpose does it serve you to assassinate Mr. Wright's or Mr. McNair's character at this point? What about Ben Rothlisberger or John Daly and their character flaws? I suppose in your opinion they didn't make the "decisions of a dumb asses". Or does your opinion only apply to black athletes?
Roethlisburger is a young man getting himself immersed in poontang. Daly is a drunk......... but what these guys AREN'T doing is winding up dead as a result of the "good people they're surrounding themselves with.
Here's another good kid who is just oppressed by the man, misunderstood and not given a fair chance in America.

Lookie here, if it turns out Lorenzen's choices and behavior aren't what put him in harms way, I will be both shocked AND apologetic on this board. The media will try to dilute this as much as they can.
Here's the deal, these boneheads make millions and enjoy the public eye. As I said, is this a tragedy? OF course it is. It is it reasonable to think that Lorenzens personal choices put im in a high risk situation? LIke I said, I would bet dollars to donuts on it.
There isn't a damned thing disrespectful to that.
Dude, I had a boneheaded cousin, who was really was a "good kid". He was juicing dianabol, lifting and living the constant Testosterone high. He was convinced he was invincible and during the time he was at the kind of place you would expect to find an NBA player, my cousin got a S&W Wesson Model 5 emptied into his skull outside the club. Dead at 18.
He was an asshole for making choices that put him at risk. McNair was an asshole. Nice guy? Absolutely but his personal choices are what got him killed. So please, spare me your "reverence for the dead" tears.
I would be willing to bet it wasn't a downtown socialite who popped the cap over a dispute about Joan Robinson's favorite (hiccup) wine.
Here's a dead pro golfer: http://bit.ly/dj89Pd | I guess you could say she hung out with scumbags. She made bad life choices. I'm sure many thought she was a "good kid."
SHe used the judgement of a dumb ass. It doesn't matter how good of a kid anyone thinks she was, none of us knew her, but I guarantee you she fed her own risk factors.
Sorry but to me that's the behavior of an idiot.
The trouble with religion today is that a lot of people practice it, but not to many are good at it. And, it is no doubt the case with Tommy here. In addition to his demonstrated rottenness and lack of Christian behavior, he also proves himself the fool with his moronic assessment of the late Mr. Wright's choices.
And, now we know that the police took Mr. Wright's ex-wife in custody today, after spending all day at her home gathering evidence. And reportedly, the neighbors spoke of a big fire coming from the fire pit in her backyard (on one of the hottest nights of the year) the day after he went missing.
"Tragedy? Absolutely. Mystery? Let's not be simpletons." Not like Tommy V.
So you know, Lorenzo's wife was arrested, and now the real BS starts.
I agree 100% that this golfer babe, like Lorenzo exhibited behavior that more than anything, contributed to her death.
Look, let's get real here Wright was drafted what? 6th? He gets paid big money, enough that he doesn't ever have to work again and what's he do? He goes broke.
Now I guess that's the fault of predatory lenders? I don't think it was Wall Street bankers who did this one, it was handout seeking, lazy ass, good for nothing affirmative action kind of bankers who reportedly showed up at Lorenzen's house.
Still, look for Al Sharpton and Memphis liberal kooks to start some racist bullshit on this one.
I read where twice Lorenzo sold LUXURY cars to a noted drug lord. Duh, tell me, how do "guut kids" wind up selling a Lexus to a drug kingpin? Oh yeah, I know, those guys pop into Hueys all the time. Hey, if they ate one of those horribly over rated Huey Alpo Burgers, maybe that's what got em mad? (Belmont, River Oaks, Interim, Grove Grill ALL 100 times better)
And how about the white racist cops who didn't give their full effort to the 911 stress call? Everyone knows that IF it was a white guy in trouble the cops can use the same technology developed on Star Trek to magically locate someone and then beam themselves over BEFORE the bullets ever left the gun. But it was racist, they didn't do that for this kid. We need to look into the Germantown police force a lot deeper. Where is Sharpton? He should be here already. Beam that no good bastard up, too.
Look, it's sad for those who loved Lorenzen and it's sad that he was murdered. HOWEVER...... if he behaved responsibly, took care of himself, respcted life, he would still be alive.
But he didn't and he's dead.
The details have legal implication but the ink on the big picture dried on this story 10 days ago.
Lorenzen Wright has committed no crime, in fact, he was the victim of a horrendus crime. These nay-sayers and murder mouth individuals need to keep their pie holes closed and allow the man's family and friends a chance to grieve. All this rampant speculation regarding his financial status and bringing his murder onto himself due too his lifesyles choices. These are some of the facts, he was a man who loved his children, his family and friends. At the time of death he was not involved in a crime, but home to pick-up his children for a return trip home with them for the summer. I ask all the readers to say a prayer for the family and friends of this young man and for those leaving these hurtful messages stop the hating.
Lorenzen Wright was a victim of a horrendus crime to all the nay-sayers and especially to those who wish to murder mouth this young man please keep your pie hole closed. All this rampant speculation on his money woes and his lifestyle choices is what contributed to his death is mere speculation. No, what led to his death was another person decided to play God, he/she made that decision, no matter Lerenzen Wright's faults as a person. To the family, friends and especially to Lorenzen children may God comfort you during these most trying times, take comfort that no one is truly forgotten if you keep them in your heart.
I am unable to find any place (at least not any place reputable) to verify TV's "Lorenzo's [sic] wife was arrested" statement.
The CA isn't reporting it, nor are any of the local TV stations. The closest is Eyewitness News (CW30) http://www.myeyewitnessnews.com/news/local… which reported that the police "swarmed" the ex-wife's house, but went to great pains to make it clear no arrests were made (understandably, since saying someone has been arrested, when they haven't, can be defamatory).
MSNBC.com has a "report" http://nbcsports.msnbc.com/id/38515734/ns/… saying she's "in police custody," but citing Eyewitness News as the basis for the statement. So much for that "report."
I just caught the fact that TV dissed Huey's and propped some corporate franchise joints. THIS is the proverbial last straw and with it, TV is now officially a carpetbagger and and a poltroon.
This may explain it, Scott: taste buds and intelligence are both located in the cerebral cortex. Did you really expect someone who wants to turn Midtown into one big strip shopping center to appreciate the superiority of a Hueyburger over a chainburger? Thomas Boggs is rolling over in his grave.
But in TV's defense, he didn't compare HUeyburgers to chains. He compared them to the burgers at other locally owned restaurants. The Belmont does have a better burger than HUey's, quite frankly. TV is still a gasbag, though.
He's easy to assume the worst about, since he usually outdoes even the worst you can think about him.
tommy boy, you just owned yourself when you said no golfer ever ended up like this.....just admit that you are a racist so we can all move on with our lives....
tommy boy, i guess lorenzen shouldnt have been hanging out with his ex wife then......all that 3 gunman story was bull crap from the get go.....she had something to do with it.....if he is irresponsible with hanging with his murderous ex wife then i guess so.....
No one knows when their life will end nor do we know how it will end....it's really upsetting to me to see these negative post about things that only God can project....I look at some of these post and the HATE in some of you people is unbelievable.....this is sad...
Lady Counselor, with all due respct. I am sick enough to puke hearing you bleeding heart liberals whining about 911, and response time and god knows what other bullshit you blame to avoid the REAL ISSUE.
Lorenzen Wright is dead because personal choices he made brought himself, his children and his family into contact with thugs. He's dead because nobody in his life taught him to make better choices and act responsibly.
Had he not been raised in this cancerous liberal era of "It's All Good" perhaps he wouldn't have squandered his millions and wound up tempting his own fate.
THAT's the message you should be sending if you want to save young kids. For every Lorenzen you have 100,000 kids with little chance looking up to these asshole athletes.
Throughout my life my Father idolized Jim Brown, the greatest running back to ever live. For a time he was my idol as well and we followed him to as many football games, regardless of snow, wind and ice, as my Dad could afford on his Steel Worker salary.
My Dad surprised me in 1963 by telling me he was going to purchase season tickets. That turned out to be Brown's last year. However, stunned, my Father couldn't believe I told him I was no longer interested in seeing Brown. For the life of him, he was puzzled until he sat down and asked me.
The fact of the matter was, from the time I was a boy my Father taught me that it was disgusting to hit or hurt a woman. He told me that if I ever witnessed a man hitting a woman that I should step in and if I didn't he would be disappointed in me.
The fact of the matter was that I learned Jim Brown liked to hit women, and because he was an athlete, NOBODY, not whites, not blacks said a got-damned thing about it. Jim continued to be idolized and nobody ever held him accountable.
But someone DID speak out about it. My Dad did. He taught me about life and about personal responsibility.
So forgive me if I don't make an exception for this fine upstanding man who was sooooo wronged by society.
Lorenzen Wright had EVERY chance to keep himself out of harms way. Nobody steered the kid right and people like you who want to direct ALL this blame on improving the system are the reason the black community continues to suffer so much.
You want to mourn? I feel just as bad, but there are much bigger issues here.
Who is going to teach young kids to be strong and to resist what seems easy and instead choose what is tough and hard? Who is going to teach the how to make good choices? It sure as hell isn't you with all your blame and calling for more government spending to look into this.
Kids should know about what Lorenzens dumb choices and associations did to him. He should serve as an axample for youth of what NOT to aspire to. I guarantee you if he had his life back THAT and not 911 calls would be his message.
Personal Responsibility, Ma'am. it.s lacking.
It still begs the question why it took Germantown so long to forward the information that a 911 call was received from Wright's cell phone and shots were heard on that call. THat's incompetence on someone's part; Tommy endorses incomepetence, evidently.
TV: You're Dad sounds like a great guy, an old school father who stands by what he believes and instills those values in his kids like mine did. Do you have any kids, Tommy? Or Grandkids? Man, if not, you're missing the boat. Like you I'm in my 50's, and rather than shake my fist at the world I spend my extra time instilling values in my 3 kids and two grandkids. I don't call them vermin, I don't make fun of their outward appearance, I just treat them like human beings. They seem to respond pretty positively. I swear, bro, you'd be amazed at how much better you feel about your own self as a result of treating those around you in a humane fashion.
Tommy, I'm sick of your ruthless pontificating on people's lives that you have no knowledge about. You are spewing bilge about Lorenzen Wright's "life choices," something you know absolutely nothing about. None of us do. You are a constant, relentless pain in the arse, and I'm tired of having to come to the website and wonder who you've slammed or what venom you've spouted. It's time for you to find another website. This liberal vermin has had enough. Sayonara.
BV: BRAVO, BRAVISSIMO! I take it you decided to give him the proverbial one last chance after you responded to my comment about the increasingly incendiary nature of his vitriol. He's got nothing to complain about. You gave him plenty of notice and opportunity to straighten up and fly right.
In any event, milestone reached (better late than never). Today, TV; Thursday, you know who. This could turn out to be a banner week.
P.S. I wonder where he'll go (not that I really care, since I won't go looking for him, and I'll miss him about as much as I would a pus-filled boil). I suspect the CA won't tolerate him either (if they haven't already taken similar action--they're real quick on the poof trigger, especially when race is involved). Where does that leave him, locally, to ply his venom?
Not Tommy!!! Come on, Bruce, I've just started learning from my mentor. You can't cut him off now. I'll be loss wifout hims.
