I was beating my keyboard to death earlier this week trying to make some tough deadlines when I received an IM from Bob Hetherington at the University of Memphis. Tickets for Phantom of the Opera went on sale on Monday. They sold out the whole run of the show in three-and-a-half hours.

Hetherington: " As long as I have been here I have never known a production of our to sell out the entire run a few weeks before it opened. We had an enormous line which snakes down the hall and the phones rang constantly. They still are, but all the seats are now sold. Everyone is working at full speed ahead to get this production ready for the Centennial Celebration and I am pleased and exhausted to say that it is really kicking my butt."

Readers know I'm no great fan of this show. In fact, this grumptacular review is the first thing I ever wrote for The Memphis Flyer. But this is fantastic news for the U of M.

Now, let the scalping commence!

There's like 7 or 8 total performances and yet they've double cast the female lead. Why?

My guess is that they want to spread the unusual opportunity around. I'm all for that in a University setting. It was the best part about the way we did rep at Rhodes. You might be in a different play every night and you might play various characters large and small over the course of the run. Helps build chops while giving actors a real sense for how the fabric of a play is woven.
