MCS Overage Academies to Begin in January

Early in his tenure, Memphis City Schools deputy superintendent of academic operations Irving Hamer identified one overarching problem plaguing the district.

In August, Hamer told the school board that by 12th grade, 22 percent of the district’s students — more than a fifth — are overage for their grade level.

Lee’s Legal Bills Denied

The City Council’s MLGW committee voted down a resolution approving the release of more than $426K in legal bills for former MLGW head Joseph Lee this morning.

The full council already voted against the measure in October, but then the minutes of that meeting were pulled after chairman Myron Lowery suggested a compromise of a lesser amount.

Sole Restaurant Now Open Downtown

After a brief close, the restaurant in downtown’s Westin Hotel has reopened with a new executive chef (Matthew Crone), a new name (Sole Restaurant & Raw Bar), and a group of not-so-new owners from Interim in East Memphis.

“We are bringing something different to a fantastic location,” says Ben Brock, Sole’s managing partner. “People will see big changes in the restaurant’s food.”….

Griz Face Spurs Tonight

After an encouraging 3-3 start, the Grizzlies are reeling through a 1-6 stretch right now and look to get back on track against the San Antonio Spurs tonight at FedExForum.

The last time the Spurs visited FedExForum, Rudy Gay buried a game-winning three-pointer in Tim Duncan’s face. The Grizzlies can only hope for similar heroics tonight. Check out Beyond the Arc for Chris Herrington’s game preview.
