SNOOKNUK is a Memphis native currently living in Los Angeles. Earlier this year, the Grammy-nominated artist collaborated with producer Gebre Waddell on a project that would bring her back to her hometown. Waddell is a board member of the Stax Music Academy, and the duo wanted to highlight some of the great work the school has been doing with some of the Bluff City’s most talented young people.
The video, directed by Cheri Moon and shot and edited by Brandon McCoy, shows SNOOKNUK teaching the kids of Stax Academy like Julie Andrews in The Sound of Music. But the meaning behind the song is deeper than that, says SNOOKNUK. “My song “Do Re Mi” is not about learning notes to sing. It’s about freedom of expression, finding your voice, and discovering what you have to say. I am a product of Memphis, and I inherited its musical gene. Through this collaboration with Stax Music Academy, I’m connecting to the legacy that Memphis has and continues to foster.”
