An OUTMemphis leader announced the closing the Midtown facility’s operations for a week following a shooting on Tuesday that left two people injured.
“Our buildings will be closed to visitors for the next week,” said Molly Quinn, OUTMemphis CEO. “We will communicate again when we are reopening the Center to the public.”
The advocacy group said they’re connecting participants and staff to mental health services in the aftermath of the shooting, calling it a “traumatic event.”
“Our doors, when they open again, will remain open to the youth searching for belonging, the elders who built this movement, and every person in between who needs somewhere to land.”
OUTMemphis said any donations received will be used for mental health and trauma response services and security tools and costs.
Memphis police made an arrest in the case on Wednesday, after asking the public for help in identifying a suspect. Aljon Tyler was arrested and charged with three counts of attempted second-degree murder and possession of a weapon during the commission of a dangerous felony.
