Silky Sullivan, owner of Silky O’Sullivan's on Beale Street, is making plans to take the taste of Memphis to Saigon, Vietnam, next year for a three-day international barbecue fest. The fest will feature 40 to 50 teams from around the world that will compete for $25,000 in cash.

“I like to take Memphis barbecue and put it in other places,” Sullivan says.

Sullivan has put Memphis in other places since 1984. He’s marinated and smoked in Ireland, Bangkok, Cuba, and Russia.

The Vietnam international barbecue fest will be held August 2010. After the fest, Sullivan plans to tour different towns in Vietnam with his ribs by his side.

“It’s a cultural exchange,” he says. “I might even add barbecue egg rolls to my menu.”

If Vietnam seems too far away, Sullivan is hosting a barbecue contest this year August 21st to 23rd in New Orleans. The contest will be similar to Memphis' barbecue fest and marks the opening of the football season in New Orleans. Thirty teams are expected to compete for $25,000 in awards.

Teams interested in entering the New Orleans contest should call John Willingham at 848-7427.
