Lunch at 20/20 Diner

Posted By on Wed, Sep 8, 2010 at 2:41 PM

I had been wanting to have lunch at 20/20 Diner inside the Southern College of Optometry for a long time, but I wasn't sure of the protocol. So when I saw chef Kathy Katz at 20/20's booth at the Memphis Farmers Market, I asked.

"Just tell security you're hungry," she said.

There's guest parking in front of the college's main building on the Madison side, and then sign in and grab a badge from security before heading to the diner on the 4th floor.

20/20's menu has a number of sandwiches, priced from $2.50 to $6.50: BLT, turkey tarragon, Cajun roast beef, pimento cheese, among them.

Pam opted for the chicken salad and was pleased she did.

There's also a plate lunch with an entree of the day and a choice of sides ($5.25-$6.50). The sides selection is particularly generous, with grilled green beans, Southwestern 3-bean salad, and Mediterranean pasta among the usual mashed potatoes, black-eyed peas, and mac & cheese.

Among the specials on the day of our visit were Frito pie and hummus ($2.50-$5).

The hummus was spicy — not so much in heat, though there was a bit of that, but in how intensely flavored it and the pita-bread were. A memorable dish!
