Metalsmith Adam Hawk, assistant professor of fine arts and foundations at Memphis College of Art, was chosen as one of 11 North American artists to represent the continent and the Society of North American Goldsmiths in a traveling exhibition that will be begin in Shanghai during Shanghai Design Week.

The events will be hosted by Shanghai M21 Art Museum, Tongji University, Shanghai International College of Design and Innovation and the Triple Parade Foundation.

The exhibition and symposium will and run from September through October. It will travel to Beijing later in the year.

Hawk, who moved to Memphis in 1999 to attend Memphis College of Art, recently closed his exhibit, “The Laser Show,” at Playhouse on the Square.

He described the show as “an exploration merging my traditional metalsmithing background with new technologies.”

Hawk used a computer-operated laser cutting machine to get the patterns on the enameled surfaces.
