Now it's taken another step closer to reality, according to The Wrap.
The headline news is that Forest Whitaker (an Oscar winner for his portrayal of MLK-antithesis Idi Amin) is in talks to step into the role of King.
From The Wrap:
"Story follows Dr. King's final days as he struggles to balance his personal life and the civil rights movement while he organizes what ends up being his last protest march in Memphis, Tennessee, where he was assassinated by James Earl Ray. Simultaneously, the FBI, which had been wiretapping King before his death, leads an intense manhunt for his killer."
So, it sounds like Greengrass has the money and the lead and a script. Not announced is a location. Cue percolating civic rage if it films in New Orleans or some such.
If Memphis doesn't film in Memphis, maybe the potential rival could be made here? As The Wrap notes, "King's family is developing their own project at DreamWorks and along with his close confidante Andrew Young, they have objected to Greengrass' intended warts-and-all portrayal of King."
Also, if the movie is really bad, does that mean Memphians will relive the trauma of it when the Grizzlies play poorly?
