Thanks BCG! I agree. However, irresponsible rhetoric spans more than just politics, such as bullying kids with vile comments until they commit suicide and even in everyday personal relationships people make hurtful comments about friends and spouses in order to be right about something at the other person's expense. This sadly is our culture. ...In the "Power of Now", the author, Eckhart Tolle, discusses our "need to be right" about what we believe being based in a fear of death. Thus some people will go to extremes "to be right" to protect their beliefs so they won't feel their existence is threatened. He also describes the need to be right as a form of violence. So not only do people need to be responsible for what they say, they need to be ok with other people not agreeing with really stop the violence. We would need a nation of reallly mature people for that - we can only hope...someday.
