Re: “Council Changes Names of Forrest Park, Confederate Park, and Jefferson Davis Park

What was "racist" about the names of three Memphis City Parks? That's just folly! Would you ban the automobiles named "Lincoln" because he advocated deporting all Blacks back to Africa after the war? Would you refuse to honor the One Dollar Bill because George Washington owned slaves? Refuse any coin featuring Jefferson or Monticello because it was a slave plantation? Refuse to honor F. D. Roosevelt because he was a staunch supporter of segregation in the US military?

Slavery started under the British flag in the US, and continued for 85 years under the Stars and Strips, a "racist" flag. The Confederacy was not "about slavery" you un-informed people. It was about State power vs Federal power, and you invoke your Confederate heritage when you refuse to bow to Nashville. Three million Federal soldiers did not fight and die to 'free the slaves," they would have deserted and gone home if they had believed that between 1861 and 1865.

Yankee citizens rioted in NY and Chicago when the Emancipation Proclamation was combined with the DRAFT, as millions of white northern men swore they would never fight for "African Americans," a term unknown in the 1860's.

Nathan Bedford Forrest formed the Klan, so goes the legend, but he did so to protect whites and blacks from undisciplined Federal occupation troops. When the Klan became violent against the Southern people (white AND black) he ordered them to cease and desist, and stepped away from what became something hateful and vile.

Remember, people: the KKK marches under the US Flag at every parade, every meeting, alongside the mis-used Battle Flag which NEVER stood for oppression or slavery, it stood for free people against DC.
