Re: “Dauphin Island Getaway

My parents are DI natives. Your article is really pretty accurate. There are 2 great restaurants located just off the island. Bailey's (try the West Indies Salad which is not a salad at all, but a dee-lish crabmeat dish!) and Pelican Reef are located just over the bridge on the mainland. Worth the drive. The Dauphin Island Bakery serves a nice breakfast on the weekends and pastries during the week.

The water color is due to the fact that DI is in the Bay of Mobile and so close to the mouth of the Mississippi River and is a totally different eco-system than the gulf beaches. You learn to appreciate it during migratory bird seasons and oyster-eating months. DI is more of a fishing village than a beach town.

The West End provides an inexpensive play area for families - beach, chair rentals, showers, boogie board rentals, snack shack, bags, horseshoes, water slide, etc. Not a bad way to spend a day.
