Re: “MemphisFlyer.com to require Facebook or Google account for comments

I want to express my gratitude to the entire Flyer staff for allowing us to comment over the years. I think the change is welcome. I have been disappointed in seeing the same types of comments - such as non-stop Memphis bashing - from a very small number of trolls. I'm also sure my comments have been umm... spirited.. at times but I do feel Memphis is on the verge of great things and having a platform to express that excitement in a thoughtful manner has been a gift that the MF staff has given us and for that I thank you. One last thing - I've noticed in the CA Facebook page - most of the anti-Memphis, racist, homophobic, sexist comments come from outside the city limits.

Re: “Celebration Scheduled to Kick off 'Great Streets' Downtown

This looks great! Memphis is currently hosting a major cycling conference and this project really puts our best foot forward.

Re: “Mayor: Greensward Deal Is a 'Win-Win-Win'

Heres hoping the "Save the Greensward" folks have the ability to support a progressive set of candidates in the next council elections. Remember, the Chamber of Commerce asked to not receive funding from the city for one purpose. To funnel cash into the campaigns of people who will do their bidding. Berlin Boyd, for example, was funded by the Chamber and a handful of good ole boy white male Republicans.

Re: “Council Members: Mayor 'Disrespected' Council on Beale Bucks

Sayre's law states, in a formulation quoted by Charles Philip Issawi: "In any dispute the intensity of feeling is inversely proportional to the value of the issues at stake."

Small town local politics is the most vicious and bitter form of politics, because the stakes often are so low.

Our local paper just quoted the CEO of Service Master saying no one called him from local government when he announced the company was possibly leaving town. Did the council discuss this on Tues? No, but that would happen in a big city where the Council would hold the Mayor accountable over job retention.

When is the last time the Council proactively talked about job creation or retention? The lack of living wage jobs is a slap all over my body. A failing bus system is a slap to my face and rather than playing hardball with the Mayor spend that energy recruiting new business to open in disadvantaged neighborhoods.

Re: “County Officials Seek End of Federal Monitoring of Juvenile Court

Asking Jefferson Beauregard Sessions to act on this request is an affront to our community. Shame.

Re: “Gannett to Sell Commercial Appeal Building

How long before Gannet is asking for a PILOT grant to move downtown, because.. you know... the math just doesn't pencil out without one.
