Won't be the first time the public disagrees with the critics. My daughter went to see the musical with her BFF, and the BFF's aunt. They absolutely loved it. Couldn't stop talking about it. They are just regular public. Certainly not possessing the discriminating tastes of critics. (count their lucky stars) Listening closely to them, I could tell that the musical, at its core, it was formulaic (almost a remake of A STAR IS BORN in some ways), but that the energy, and the quality of the performances (especially the singing, they could not stop talking about the singing) and the slick staging all made for them a very memorable evening. I'd call that a pretty successful start. I don't play a playwright on TV, but I am one (in reference to ZEBRA's posted comment), and I sure would be content with an audience response like that.
