This article should have mentioned that Jim Lawson was the founder and owner of Top's Barbecue. He opened one shop in 1952 and built the business to more than 6 outlets before selling it in the 1980s. He was also the one who perfected the recipes. My mother worked as manager of several different locations between 1957 and 1972. I still stop by for a sandwich when I'm in Memphis but the food is not as good as it was in the 50s and 60s.

I remember my parents partying at the Silver Slipper in the early 50s. I still have pictures of them there, the kind they took in nightclubs then. They are in a heavy paper folder with the name and picture of the club on the front.
