Re: “Keeping It Together

Shouldn't we really be thankful to FedEx. They are the ones that donated the money to the consulting group that ACTUALLY did the work.

Re: “Haslam: Not a "Given" He'll Sign Norris Bill But Doubts Veto

Why is it a bad thing for the suburban cities to have their own school districts? I don't understand all of the hatred concerning this. The objection seems to be fueled purely out of spite and hatred.

Re: “A Path Worth Taking

Egomaniacs are driving this unified school approach. Why else would they care what the municipalities want to do? The only school systems which have more than 100,000 students that have been successful district-wide are in extremely affluent cities. So ask the people that are serving on the Unified School Board and the Transition Planning Commission, "Why are you so intent on attempting to cripple the municipalities' attempt to create their own smaller districts?" I can't think of many reasons other than it is going to make living in those cities attractive to many, but at least it will keep people in Shelby County. Ah, here comes the real reason... the egos that this group brings to the table are so large they I think they honestly believe they are going to find the proverbial silver bullet to make this new unified system successful at delivering a 'world class education'. Why do many on the USB and TPC have their children in private schools? If they feel so strongly about this system, why are their kids taking advantage of this wonderful education? Because there is always something better out there, and those with the means will make that happen for their kids.

Stop the fear mongering and just lay out the truth about why you don't support municipal school districts.

Re: “Bartlett Leaders Ready to Go Muni

I am a Bartlett resident and in favor of the proposed Bartlett Municipal School system.

I was present at the Bartlett meeting and McDonald did not say that $750k would meet the debt service on a new school. He stated that it could go toward the debt service of a new school. The debt service on a new high school would be at least $2 million/per year.

However if the county decides to raise capital funds through a bond issue, BMS would get their appropriate per student share of those funds just as MCS has for all these years. That would help in deferring the cost of a new high school.

Re: “First Reactions to the Rudy Gay Deal

If Heisley is willing to keep this core together by spending money the way he use to, then all of this talk of 'is it worth it?' is moot.

Re: “Griz Reach Agreement With Rudy Gay

I'm not sure why so many people nationally are surprised. Chris, I think you nailed it. One of the teams was going to end up offering Gay a max deal and then was going to front load it to the tune of $20mil for the first year. By beating the other teams to the punch, the Griz get to structure the deal in a way that best suits their financial plans.

Again... until I see Mayo consistently play at PG and fail, I will continue to believe that he is playing out of position. I think the Grizzlies could make the playoffs with one more acquisition, Hakim Warrick. Arthur is never going to live up what Warrick once provided this team.

PG - Mayo, Conley, Vasquez
SG - Xavier, Mayo, Young
SF - Gay, Barnes, Carroll
PF - Randolph, Warrick, Arthur
C - Marc, Thabeet, Haddadi

Re: “Making Sense of the Ronnie Brewer Decision

Wow... maxing him out on the first day of free agency... Heisley's wallet must have been too heavy this morning.
