Re: “It's a Shelter Dog's Life

It isn't just the Shelby County animal shelter, this is a national problem.

We adopted two dogs from the Tipton County animal shelter last year which were housed in two different areas of the shelter, both had to be euthanized for distemper after a few weeks of living with us. Luckily the vet was empathetic and didn't break us with an insane bill for care and eventual euthanasia.

Common sense- you don't put government in charge of taking care of living beings. The problems start with not enough budgeted funds to provide adequate services while over paying administrative employees. This eventually turns into a bunch of complacent employees collecting an easy check and enjoying great benefits while neglecting their responsibilities. The DMV is a classic example.

Leave the care of living beings to nonprofit organizations. It really is that easy. If we took just a portion of the tax dollars we spend on administrative pay and benefits for shelter employees alone and donated those funds to the humane society, animals would get vastly better care than they ever will at a government run facility.

This will be corrected, employees will be replaced and then the cycle will start all over again when the new employees get complacent and apathetic due to the lack of necessary funding. When the regulating government agencies move on to other issues we will see the same issues arise.
