Re: “Old Navy Won't Sell Gay Pride Shirts Here

As a business, obviously their PRIMARY motivation is to generate revenue and then (maybe) act as an instrument for social agendas second. According to their press releases, Old Navy doesn't know if these shirts are going to sell well -- especially in markets where gay gear doesn't traditionally fly off the shelves -- and is starting with a limited release. If all goes well, they plan to broaden the releases in the future and make the Pride shirts an annual thing in the avenue of their iconic "flag shirts" every summer. From Old Navy's perspective, maybe it's not a solid business move to flood the American south with pro-gay shirts until you know how they're going to perform. As for the standing-up-for-what's-right angle, I think we can all agree that the clothing industry has never really been too far out of LGBT hands. I for one am glad that they're starting this at all. They could just as easily have poured all this money into another charity or cause -- heaven knows there's still a few cancers that haven't gotten the Armstrong/Komen makeover.
