Re: “Bianca Knows Best ... and Helps a Questioning Vegan

mad_merc - Vegetarians eat no meat but generally eat milk, eggs, cheese, butter, honey, and other animal products. Vegans eat no animals products at all and wear no animal products (it is an ethical stance, not just a healthy diet). I'm not entirely sure about straight-edge, but I think no alcohol, tobacco, drugs.

38103 - When breeding chicks for egg laying, the males are useless (a different kind of chicken is bread for meat) and therefore the male chicks are thrown away, suffocated, or ground up into fertilizer. Also, when an egg laying chicken is no longer productive it is slaughtered. Eating eggs contributes to the slaughter of animals.

Second, cows must be kept pregnant on a regular basis to keep producing large amounts of milk (just like humans). When the calf is born, he/she is separated from his/her mother almost immediately. If the calf is male, then the calf is sent to a veal farm (milk = veal). When the milk cow no longer produces enough milk (around 3 or 4 years old), she is sent to slaughter.
