Really enjoyed this exchange -- very substantive and informative. Greg, thanks for bringing up Aaron Eckhart in Dark Knight. I didn't like that movie as much as so many other people, but I thought he had a tougher role than even Ledger, and he pulled it off and then some. As for Best Actor, here's a statistic that I think favors Sean Penn: Every year since 1997, one of the acting awards has gone to someone playing a real person (and in '97, Kim Basinger won for playing a fictional character playing a real person). Neither Frank Langella nor Josh Brolin have much of a chance, which leaves Penn as the only real-life role. But like you, I'd rather see Rourke win.
