Re: “It's a Shelter Dog's Life

I have adopted 3 dogs from the Memphis Animal Shelter. Unfortunately, one had to be put down due to distemper. He had a wonderful, loving personality and I had fallen in love with him in a matter of days so his euthanasia was no easier because of our short relationship. The Memphis Animal Shelter has always been an extremely difficult place to look for a pet. It is depressing at all times; however, I have always encouraged people to please go look for a pet there. My dogs have consistently been outstanding, intelligent, loving animals and my current dog, a chocolate lab mix, is no less so. The final comment in this article, "I wouldn't adopt from the shelter and I wouldn't tell anyone to adopt from the shelter" hurt me so badly. Why would you leave people with this impression? The population of stray, abuse, and neglected animals is so large in Memphis and Shelby County and no one wanted to go look for a pet at the shelter in the past. Sadly, they are put down on a regular basis while people go to puppy farms and pet stores for pets that are not better than the lovely mutts at the Shelter. Please do not encourage people to stop adopting from the Shelter. It is not a service to the animals or your readership. Thank you.
