Re: “Three People Beaten by Mob of Teens in Kroger Parking Lot

I grew up in an area totally devoid of racism, but moved here when I was 10 during the busing/integration era. I am now 46. I have been studying this local racial divisiveness for a very long time including having done over 200 individual one on one interviews about racism with black teens and adults in some of the rougher areas of Memphis. Being white, I also get to hear lots of whites who assume I'm one of them talk serious and even vicious racism toward blacks. This goes back many generations. I can tell you this- the vast majority of black racism toward whites is a reaction to systematic white racism toward blacks. I'm not making excuses for anyone, just stating facts. You have your sociopaths and what-not, but the majority that I know of is definitely learned behavior reacting to a still pervasive white racism.

In my industry I deal with roughly 100 or so mid to high level professionals- managers, reps, owners, etc., and not a single one is black. Zero can be a very large number indeed. Why is this? Because there are still a lot of white people who simply would not buy from or deal with blacks. In the above-mentioned interviews, some of the answers to my questions were simply astounding. The beer bottles thrown at them out of gun-racked, rebel flagged four wheel drive trucks. The employment applications thrown in wastebaskets in front of the eyes of the person who just filled it out. The subtle but stinging lack of service by people who treat their white customers much better than their black customers. The incredible amount of police stops for "driving while black." I have a black friend from England that has only been here three years but has been pulled over and harassed over twenty times without once having broken the law. He's a very mild-mannered chemist who just happens to have black skin.

I have been to that Kroger hundreds of times and know the area very well, having lived a couple of blocks away for years. This incident, by the best reports I can find, had four victims- two white and two black. The video just happens to show one of the white kids. This may or may not be racially motivated. We will have to get more back-story and witness' accounts to know for sure. Right now we don't have enough information to say either way. What is absolutely clear, however, is that Memphis is still in serious trouble when it comes to racial issues on any and every level. We ALL have work to do, both the "white community" and the "black community." It's going to take a lot of time. The old people aren't going to change, so we have to help the youths here. Right now, they are lost. Their parents are still angry and that gets passed down like religion. It is very sad.
