Re: “2017 Ostranders — Picks, Pans and WHO GOT ROBBED!?!?

No such thing as a small part? Clearly you've not taken a good look at our President.

Re: “Meet the Tennessee Lawmakers Who Think Running Over Protesters Should Be Protected

Both men's legislative records are linked to the bill-tracker site with abstracts. But if you're not inclined to click, here's the abstract for SB0944: "
Tort Liability and Reform - As introduced, provides civil immunity for the driver of an automobile who injures a protester who is blocking traffic in a public right-of-way if the driver was exercising due care. - Amends TCA Title 19; Title 20; Title 29, Chapter 34; Title 54 and Title 55."

Re: “Elvis Week: Deep Cuts Playlist

Mediocrity used to be so much better. Can completely imagine a Tom Waits "City By Night." His horns would sound more like a traffic snarl, but the piano would be just as clear. And the cheese would be spread on with a knowing growl. It's genre -- straight candy.

Re: “Ostrander Award Nominees, 2017 — Community Division.

Exactly, Bill. It's great that we have a community that produces one-offs as strong as Krapp's Last Tape. But the Ostranders don't (and shouldn't be expected to) account for one-offs. Or even two-offs. And I don't think anybody produces Beckett in Memphis hoping for a prize. On the other hand, if Tony Isbell is a Eugart Yerian honoree some day, his work on indie projects like Krapp, Thais, and other labors of love will figure into that. But as far as I know, established troupes with announced seasons, able to make assurances about dates and judge access can apply for consideration.

Re: “Ostrander Award Nominees, 2017 — Community Division.

It has been. The awards are for companies, not individual indie productions. There are some requirements, but other indies have met them. It's unreasonable to expect everybody who puts on a show whenever to be considered, but only a few years ago changes were made in how judging takes place to make the Ostranders more flexible/inclusive of smaller companies with seasons/staying power. Check with the folks who manage the judges. They'll tell you everything you need to know.

Olivia, as a former indie producer I couldn't agree more about the importance of independent work. But why get insulted when you can get involved? Companies like New Moon and Voices of the South are also indies. There are requirements that I can't quote chapter & verse. But there are folks who can.
