Re: “Three (More) Thoughts on Memphis Tiger Football

I welcome some solid thinking away from the stadium loudspeakers and agree that overall the university has and continues to move in the right direction affecting the overall health and progress of our community and region far more than any 11-men on the gridiron for a few hours every year.

Re: “Bike Lane Buy-In Rescheduled

Odd that on the same day I saw this promising story I saw a brief on the NY Times website about efforts to dismantle a bike lane in Manhattan.

Re: “Score One for Chumney

Jackson - It takes a big man - an an even bigger journalist - to admit to being wrong. You did most eloquently to set the record straight about Carol Chumney. I applaud your honesty and think I'm in a large crowd of readers who greatly admires your work. I also think Ms. Chumney - who always calls them as she sees them - has much potential to be a great mayor. Cheers, Lewis Nolan

Re: “Commercial Appeal Layoff Announcement Postponed

Bruce Van Wyngarden's excellent column about the CA's troubles this week was noble and right on target. Despite the sometimes maddening lapses in news coverage and judgment recently, The Commercial Appeal remains far and away the important source of general news in Memphis and the area. The Flyers's "beat" coverage about the CA's impending, further staff reductions and retirement of one of our town's really great journalists, Dave Flaum, makes me sad. Were the CA ever to totally close, it would make the job of the Flyer and the TV wannabes untenable and life in River City more miserable for those who try to keep well informed.
